Ahmedabad Plane Crash: The Gujarat government on Wednesday announced plans to build a state-of-the-art super-speciality hostel and canteen block for doctors at the New Mental Campus near Ahmedabad Civil Hospital (Asarwa) at an estimated cost of Rs 105 crore.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said that Tata Airlines, which owns Air India, will provide Rs 53.12 crore to the Health Department for the losses incurred during last year's plane crash.

Air India Plane Crash

A London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel building in Meghaninagar shortly after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

The disaster caused significant damage to the New Mental Campus under the Health Department, specifically the Atulyam 1 to 4 blocks, the canteen, and the power sub-station building. A total of 92 students were residing in the hostel at the time of the accident.

Following the incident, a structural audit declared the buildings unsafe for habitation, forcing their complete demolition, Jagran.com reported.

To cover the losses, the Health Department sought Rs 53.12 crore from Tata Airlines, which has agreed to release the full compensation shortly.

Gujarat Govt To Build Rs 105-Crore Super-Speciality Hostel And Canteen Block

The Gujarat government has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art super-speciality hostel and canteen block at the New Mental Campus (IGP Compound) in Meghaninagar. The project, estimated to cost a total of Rs 105 crore, aims to significantly upgrade accommodation facilities for doctors.

- Capacity: In view of the addition of 48 new super-speciality seats in the medical field, the facility will be designed to accommodate 236 married PG doctors. The campus will also include separate accommodation for unmarried PG students.

- Budget: To expedite the initial phase of construction, a budget of Rs 34.65 crore has been approved for the financial year 2026-27 against the estimated amount of Rs 51.84 crore.

Structure Plan And Amenities

The planned 'Atulyam 1 to 7' PG hostels will be built with a G+8-story structure. It will feature modern amenities, including:

- Apartment Layout: Each flat will be built in a studio apartment style, comprising a living room with an attached kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom.

- Campus Infrastructure: The project includes a new canteen block, a dedicated power sub-station, an RO water plant, a drainage system, and a firefighting system.

- Facilities: The campus will also have other key amenities, including basement parking, a mess, a gym, a recreation room, and landscaped grounds.
