The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, confirmed the arrest of two PWD officials on Wednesday after a 30-year-old Public Works Department (PWD) assistant engineer was found lifeless in her rented home in Bongaigaon. The victim, who was a resident of Guwahati, was found dead around 1.30 pm on Wednesday.

In a handwritten suicide note, the deceased alleged that she was under constant mental pressure from two senior officials who allegedly forced her to approve bills for incomplete work.

Police registered a case under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, based on the note and a formal complaint lodged by her family.

"I am taking this step due to extreme stress from my work. There is no one to guide me in the office. I am tired and have nowhere to go. My parents are worried for me," Woman’s suicide note read.

The Chief Minister on Wednesday confired that two individuals were arrested in the case.

The chief minister said, "The police had arrested the two officers including a sub divisional officer. We are taking the case seriously. A team of engineers and senior officials had also visited the building, which was constructed by the contractor, whose bills were cleared while pressuring the victim."
