Bengaluru: The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) is preparing to move ahead with the first phase of the Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) project by prioritising a 23-kilometre stretch of the proposed road. Civil work tenders for this section are expected to be floated by February or March this year.

The selected stretch will connect Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) with NICE Road and is considered one of the busiest segments of the corridor due to its expected traffic volume and revenue potential.

First Phase Focus

The Bengaluru Business Corridor, earlier known as the Peripheral Ring Road, is planned as a 73-kilometre road linking Tumakuru Road and Ballari Road. To speed up execution and manage land acquisition, the project has been divided into three separate packages.

The Deccan Herald report cited officials as stating that, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the first phase is already ready. The BDA plans to begin construction on this stretch first, while work on the remaining portions will depend on land acquisition progress.

Remaining Stretches

The second phase includes a 29-kilometre section connecting Hosur Road to Old Madras Road. The third phase covers an 18-kilometre link from Old Madras Road to Ballari Road.

The project also proposes a Y-shaped connection with NICE Road. This integration will extend around four to five kilometres each on Hosur Road and Tumakuru Road.

Land Acquisition Status

The Deccan Herald report cited BDA Chairperson LK Atheeq as stating that land acquisition has seen some progress. Around 500 farmers have given their consent so far, and nearly 100 acres of land have already been acquired.

The authority aims to take possession of at least 50 per cent of the required land before issuing tenders and reach 80 per cent acquisition by the time contracts are awarded.

Opposition in Eastern Bengaluru

While land acquisition in western Bengaluru has been relatively smoother, officials are facing strong resistance from landowners in the eastern parts of the city. Many landowners have raised objections over compensation, stating that the amounts offered do not reflect market value.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has called a meeting with dissatisfied landowners on February 2 at 11.30 am at the UR Bhavan Complex, High Grounds.

A resident whose land falls under the project said the BDA is offering around Rs 5 crore per acre, while similar land in the area has been sold for more than Rs 10 crore.
