Correspondent, Navhatta (Saharsa): In a major relief for fishermen and fish farmers in Bihar, the government has decided to provide accident insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh- to all individuals engaged in fish farming and fisheries-related activities under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The initiative aims to promote fisheries and ensure the socio-economic security of fishermen and fish farmers across the state.

The online application process for the scheme has already begun. Fishermen and fish farmers often face risks of accidents while fishing or working in ponds. This scheme has been introduced to provide financial support to affected families in such unfortunate situations.

Interested fishermen and fish farmers can apply online through the designated portal at https://fisheries.bihar.gov.in/. According to the department, all eligible individuals involved in fisheries-related activities can apply to avail themselves of the scheme's benefits.

After receiving applications, the department will verify the submitted documents and identify eligible beneficiaries.

Financial Assistance in Case of Accidental Death

Under the scheme, if a registered fisherman or fish farmer dies in an accident, their dependents will receive financial assistance of up to Rs 5 lakh. One of the key features of the scheme is that the entire insurance premium will be borne by the government, ensuring that beneficiaries do not incur any additional cost.

Documents Required for Application

To avail of the scheme, applicants must first register with the department. Along with the online application, they are required to submit the following documents:

- Aadhaar Card
- Copy of Bank Passbook
- Documents related to fish farming or fisheries activities

Following document verification, departmental field officers will conduct an inspection of the applicant's pond and workplace. Upon successful completion of the verification process, eligible applicants will be granted the benefits of the scheme.
