Chennai Metro Update: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is reportedly planning to begin the construction of a multi-storey commercial building on the premises of the Arumbakkam Metro Rail station. The authority has been considering building high-rise buildings near the metro stations with the availability of land to boost the revenue. Earlier last month, CMRL stated that several new decisions will be taken for the upcoming expansion projects. Apart from boosting the revenue, the commercial buildings are also likely to provide convenience to the commuters on this route. The decision is also likely to boost the ridership, as the proposed building will have space for parking, shopping complexes, and offices.
The officials stated that the CMRL is considering building buildings along the phase 1 and the upcoming phase 2 project. While providing details, they stated that the proposed building will have a basement, parking spaces, and seven upper floors. The building will be spread across 1,660.34 sq. m of land near the Arumbakkam Metro Rail station, reported The Hindu, citing CMRL officials. The authority is considering setting up commercial development and office spaces in the building to boost the ridership.

“Of the seven floors that we have planned, four floors will be used as commercial spaces, which can have retail and food outlets, and the remaining three floors will be turned into office spaces,” an official was quoted as saying by The Hindu. The authority has floated bids for the project, and the selected firm will have two years to complete the construction.

The decision is likely to provide convenience to thousands of the residents as they will no longer need to travel extra distances due to the nearness of the office. The authority is likely to take similar steps in the upcoming months to boost the ridership and revenue for the upcoming expansion projects.
