Sonia Gandhi is poised to be re-elected as Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) during a meeting of party MPs from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Saturday. With Congress set to decide its leader in the Lok Sabha, there is strong anticipation for Rahul Gandhi to take on this significant role, according to party sources. Rahul Gandhi secured victories in the Lok Sabha elections from both Wayanad and Raebareli.

Party insiders suggest that MPs including KC Venugopal, Manickam Tagore, and Gaurav Gogoi are likely to express their support for Rahul Gandhi by raising their hands during the meeting. The leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha will also serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the House, as the party has garnered the necessary number of seats in the general elections.

According to the Congress Constitution, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Party has the authority to appoint the leaders of the party in both Houses of Parliament. It will ultimately be Sonia Gandhi's decision whether to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the party's leader in the Lok Sabha or to choose another leader. It is expected that this decision might not be made immediately, with a possibility of an announcement being made later via a press release.

Currently, Sonia Gandhi is a member of the Rajya Sabha, while Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the upper House of Parliament. A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is expected to loud the party's performance in the Lok Sabha elections. The credit for the party's improved showing, with 99 seats compared to the 44 and 52 seats won in the previous two Lok Sabha elections, is likely to go to Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.

The Congress contested the elections as part of the INDIA bloc, and together they succeeded in preventing the BJP from securing a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha, with the BJP-led NDA winning 293 seats.

The day will begin with a meeting of the Extended Congress Working Committee at around 11 AM, followed by the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting at 5:30 PM in the Central Hall of Parliament, which will include all newly elected Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs. A dinner for extended CWC and CPP members has been scheduled at Hotel Ashok at 7 PM.
