Cyclone Tej: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that cyclone Tej is expected to transform into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday noon. The storm over the Arabian Sea is also likely to cross Yemen Oman coasts between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) around the early morning of October 25.

"VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm) Tej lay centred at 2330 IST of 21st Oct over SW Arabian Sea about 330 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 690 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 720 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). Very likely to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the forenoon of 22nd Oct," the IMD posted on social media handle X.

"The WML over the Bay of Bengal concentrated into a Depression and lay centred at 2330 IST of 21st Oct over west-central Bay of Bengal, about 620 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 780 km south of Digha (West Bengal), and 900 km SSW of Khepupara (Bangladesh)," the IMD posted on X.

On Saturday, the weather agency said that Cyclone Tej is expected to move west-northwestwards by October 22, northwestwards by October 24, and finally it will move to north-northwestwards.

Cyclone Tej: What Next

After Cyclone Tej, the Iranian-named Cyclone Hamoon will come. The previous name on the list was Cyclone Biparjoy from Bangladesh, an exceptionally dangerous cyclonic storm that made landfall in Gujarat in the middle of June.

How Cyclones Are Named

The 13 member countries select the names every few years, which are then adopted in chronological order. The names selected by different nations must be devoid of any associations with politics, political personalities, religion, or other topics. It cannot be extremely unpleasant or vicious in character or hurt the feelings of any community. Additionally, the names must be brief, easily said, and contain no more than eight letters.
