Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi on Sunday doubled down on his allegations of 'vote chori' and BJP-EC collusion emphasising that the law passed in 2023 keeps the Election Commissioners protected from any action.
He said, "Do you know that no case can be filed against the Election Commissioner? Do you know when this law was made? This law was made in 2023. Why was this law made in 2023? Because Narendra Modi and Amit Shah want that no action can be taken against the Election Commission. Because the Election Commission is helping them and is stealing votes with them."
Rahul remarked while addressing a gathering in Bihar's Aurangabad. Addressing a gathering at the end of first day of his Voter Adhikar Yatra which began from Sasaram this afternoon, Gandhi also said while he was asked to submit an affidavit after his press conference exposing "vote chori", no such demand was made from BJP leaders who made similar claims in their presser.
Gandhi also raised question to the poll body as to why the law on CCTV footage was changed by the BJP government. "Today they (EC) held a press conference. I want to ask them why did the government change the law on CCTV footage of election process," Gandhi said.
He added that it is a fight to protect Ambedkar's Constitution and the principle of ‘one person, one vote'. Earlier in the day, CEC Gyanesh Kumar held a press conference and rejected Gandhi's claims of 'vote chori' as baseless. He defended Bihar SIR, saying that the revision is aimed at removing all shortcomings in voter lists, and it is a matter of grave concern that some parties are spreading misinformation about it and “firing from the EC's shoulder”.
On duplicate voter issue, the CEC clarified that befoe 2003 there was no provision to delete the names but it is available today. However, there are complexities as there can be many persons with the same name and thus it can not be removed by the EC without verification. The CEC added that no name will be removed from the lists.
