In a tragic incident on Sunday, a major fire broke out in a plastic factory cum-godown in the Bajgera area, while another massive fire destroyed over 100 huts in a slum cluster near Sikanderpur on Saturday night.

According to fire officials, the fire broke out around 2-2:30 am near the plastic factory containing plastic waste, as well as thermocol and other highly combustible items. The fire rapidly spread throughout the structure because of all the combustible materials, producing thick, dark smoke that billowed upward and created panic throughout the nearby area.

Emergency response personnel were sent to both locations, with certain residents being evacuated from the area due to safety concerns. Several employees at the warehouse tried to extinguish the fire before calling emergency services and police for assistance. 

The warehouse was located in a group of several scrap yards, with the fire spreading to two dry storage facilities located directly next to the warehouse on either side. There were many residential communities and other densely populated areas located within proximity that were also at risk of being affected by the fire due to the volume of smoke.

According to the Fire Department, plastic debris in the warehouse made it very difficult for firefighters to battle the fire. However, employees were able to help firefighters limit the amount of destruction caused by the fire by removing materials from the warehouse before emergency services and firefighters arrived. At the time of this report, firefighters were still on the scene actively attempting to extinguish the fire.

“The presence of large quantities of plastic significantly hampered firefighting efforts. However, workers at the site began removing materials soon after the fire broke out, which helped limit the extent of the damage. Fire operations are still underway at the site,” HT quoted an official. 

On Saturday night, a huge fire broke out in a slum cluster close to Sikendarpur Metro station. The fire spread rapidly through the tightly packed huts, which were surrounded by strong winds and exploding small LPG cylinders, leading to panic for those in the area.

Fire crews received their first notification of flames at about 7:35 PM, at which point multiple teams (including the Haryana Fire Service and DLF Fire Service) responded to the alarm and went to control the fire.

About 100 huts were destroyed; however, no injuries or deaths were reported thus far. The firefighters had difficulty accessing the area to combat the flames due to narrow streets, but were able to contain the fire after several hours of hard work.

As of Sunday morning, fire department units were still cooling down and conducting search-and-rescue operations, while local police and administrative units assisted with moving residents from the area and providing for those affected by the fire. A determination of the cause of both fires has not yet been made.
