UP Heatwave: IMD Issues Orange Alert for Varanasi, Purvanchal; Relief Likely After April 27 | Forecast

The weather in Varanasi and the wider Purvanchal region is becoming increasingly hot, with both minimum and maximum temperatures rising above normal levels. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Sunday, along with a yellow alert for the surrounding days. 

The weather department has also indicated cloud movement at the end of the week, with hot winds expected to continue in the atmosphere in the coming days. Due to the rise in the minimum temperature, the nights will also be hot in the coming days, and the weather will also be harsh.

Since Sunday morning, hot winds have been noticeable. While early hours offered slight relief, the heat intensified after 10 am as humidity dropped and dry, scorching winds dominated. As the day progressed, these winds created conditions similar to a heatwave. Clear skies and strong sunlight further added to the discomfort, and similar weather is expected to continue through the evening and in the days ahead.

Over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature was recorded at 43.3 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 26.0 degrees Celsius, 2.1 degrees above normal. With the minimum temperature surpassing 25 degrees Celsius, officials believed that the night temperature would also begin to rise, along with the heatwave.

IMD has predicted a significant rise by nine to ten degrees, with humidity during this period recorded at a minimum of 17 per cent and a maximum of 51 per cent. 

In the coming weeks, rising temperatures may also coincide with the intense heat period known as Nautapa. However, with the arrival of pre-monsoon activity next month, weather fluctuations are likely.

According to the Meteorological Department, the increasing heat wave intensity has led to temperatures in Banda reaching 47.4 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature of the month in April. Hot westerly winds in the lower troposphere and the anticyclone around Maharashtra have caused heatwave conditions in many areas of the state.

Similar heatwave conditions have been observed in Ballia, Varanasi, and Ghazipur, with no significant change in temperatures expected over the next two days, leading to heatwave conditions persisting until April 27. Additionally, warm nights are also expected in some parts of the state.

A western disturbance is expected to bring rainfall to western Uttar Pradesh on April 27 and will move towards eastern Uttar Pradesh. This is expected to cause a drop in temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius, which may improve heatwave conditions from April 28. Heatwave conditions are also expected in the capital, Lucknow, on April 26-27.
