In a startling incident, a man allegedly poisoned his wife and their four children before slitting his wrist in an attempted suicide at their home in Gurugram's Wazirpur village, police said on Sunday.

According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday night when the man's brother returned home around 9.30 pm. Upon his return, he found the family lying unconscious on the first floor.

The brother rushed the entire family to a hospital, where doctors declared the woman and the four children dead. The police have identified the man as Nazim, his wife Nazma (35), and their children Iqra (14), Shifa (11), Aaram (9) and Khatija (6).

Nazim, however, survived the suicide attempt. Nazim is a native of Uttar Pradesh and runs a hair salon.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Gurugram Police spokesperson Shandeep Turan said, "We have informed the woman’s family and the bodies are being sent for a post-mortem examination… Preliminary investigations indicate that the man poisoned all five and slit his wrist using a knife".

Man says family didn't wish to live

News agency PTI cited a senior police officer, saying that Nazim told police that the family did not wish to live.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Naveen Sharma said, "The cause behind the incident is not clear yet. Whether Nazim killed his wife and children by poisoning or strangling them is a matter of investigation. We have kept the bodies in a mortuary and are investigating all angles".

However, Sharma added that officials believe the motive behind the incident to be domestic problems. The police are examining the evidence collected from the crime scene, and further action will be taken.
