Karnataka: A 21 year-old-man died after drinking five bottles of liquor neat for a Rs 10,000 bet that he took with his friends. Karthik had informed his friends Venkata Reddy, Subramani, and three others that he could consume five full bottles of liquor without diluting it with water. Venkata Reddy had offered Karthik Rs 10,000 if he could do so.
Karthik gulped the five bottles but fell severely sick shortly after. He was admitted to Mulbagal Hospital in Kolar District. He died during treatment. Karthik had been married for a year, and his wife had given birth just eight days ago.
A police case has been filed against six people including Venkata Reddy and Subramani, at Nangali police station. Both have been apprehended, and police are searching for the other accused.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), around 2.6 million people die each year for consuming alcohol, accounting for 4.7% of global mortality.
There is no "safe" amount of alcohol intake, according to the WHO. Valid scientific data would have to show that there is no danger of disease or harm from alcohol use at or below a specific level in order to determine a "safe" level.

The new WHO statement makes it clear that there is no threshold at which alcohol's carcinogenic effects "switch on" and begin to show up in the human body, according to the study that is currently available.
