Kolkata Doctors' Protest:  The protesting junior doctors of Kolkata called off their 17-day-long hunger strike on Monday evening after the parents of RG Kar rape and murder victim, made an appeal to the medical professionals. Earlier, the doctors also met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, presenting their demands to her.

The development came after the parents of the victim met the junior doctors and urged them not to continue the hunger strike.

"Abhaya's parents also came and told us that we should continue the protest. They also requested we should stop the hunger strike. We feel that those who are with us should give them respect, those on hunger strike after a lot of discussion decided to withdraw from the hunger strike. We will take the strike in a different direction," Dr Aqeeb Ashraf, one of the protestors said on Monday.

While the junior doctors decided to end the hunger strike, they said they felt unhappy seeing the body language of the government officials.

“In today’s meeting (with the CM), we did get the assurance of some directives, but the body language of the state government was not positive… The common people have wholeheartedly supported us. They, as well as the parents of our deceased sister (RG Kar hospital victim), have been requesting us to call off the hunger strike, keeping in mind our deteriorating health,” a spokesperson for the doctors said.

The decision was taken following a general body meeting of the doctors. The doctors believed that they were able to bargain and implement some of the changes they sought. They further announced that there will be no health strike on Wednesday, News18 reported.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh welcomed the decision. In a post on X, he said that together the doctors and government can make the health system better.

“We are happy that finally junior doctors have withdrawn their hunger strike and also they will not go for strike tomorrow. If there are any problems, they can point out, together we can make the health system better”.
