MP UCC Bill Likely To Be Introduced In Monsoon Session Of Assembly; CM Mohan Yadav Questions Congress' Stand

MP UCC: The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a major step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Madhya Pradesh. The UCC committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai has submitted its final report to the state government.

Speaking to the media after paying tribute to former chief minister Kailash Joshi on his birth anniversary in the assembly premises on Tuesday, CM Mohan Yadav said the committee formed on the UCC has completed its work and submitted its report to the government. Now, Congress should also say whether it supports or opposes the Uniform Civil Code.

He said, "Whether it's the UCC issue or the Bhojshala case, the Congress views every issue through the lens of vote bank politics. While people of all religions have openly expressed their opinions on the UCC, the Congress has yet to clarify its position."

Recommendation To Exclude Tribals From The UCC

In its report, the committee recommended excluding Scheduled Tribes (Adivasis) from the purview of the UCC. According to a government statement, this suggestion was made keeping in mind the social and cultural conditions of Madhya Pradesh.

Bill May Be Introduced In The Monsoon Session

According to government officials, the report has been sent to the Law Department. After legal review and scrutiny by a committee of senior officials, the draft bill will be placed before the Cabinet for approval. The UCC bill is then likely to be introduced in the monsoon session of the Assembly, beginning July 20.

Draft With 404 Sections Prepared

The committee's report has been prepared in three parts. The first part provides recommendations based on a study of national, international, and state-level laws. The second part includes a detailed draft bill for the UCC, consisting of four parts, 404 sections, and seven schedules.

The third part analyses public suggestions received from across the state. The committee received over 9.58 lakh suggestions, which have been included in a detailed study report based on gender and community.

UCC Draft Prepared On These Subjects

The high-level committee was tasked with reviewing laws related to personal and family matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, adoption, guardianship, and live-in relationships and drafting a uniform legal framework. While preparing the draft, the committee also took into account gender equality, constitutional values, social diversity, and the preservation of traditional customs.
