- Mumbai faces 10 per cent water cut due to deficient rainfall.
- BMC to launch tanker-booking app for water distribution.
- Funds allocated to revive 3000 wells across Mumbai wards.
Mumbai Water Crisis: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10 per cent water cut in Mumbai due to El Niño-driven deficient rainfall. The decision was taken as the rainfall failed to bring lakes to their full capacity in the months of August and September. However, the authority has reportedly decided to allocate funds to the wards to rejuvenate wells and launch a tanker-booking app to provide convenience to the locals.
BMC To Revive Wells
While the residents have to approach ward offices to book water tankers, the new system will introduce an app to streamline the process. The proposed tanker police is soon likely to be introduced before the standing committee for approval, reported Hindustan Times. Apart from this, the wards will also be granted funds to revive wells in their region amid the crisis.
Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner (projects), while providing details, stated that forward linkages are required to be established to revive all the 3000 wells in all the wards. "The exercise will serve no purpose if we revive a well without a system to use its water," Bangar was quoted as saying by HT.
"Open wells are different from borewells, tube wells and ring wells. Water already exists in open wells, but they need to be cleaned of silt and garbage before it can be extracted for use. Housing societies can use this water for secondary purposes," he added.
App To Streamline Distribution
Bangar further highlighted that the use of app for the distribution of water can ensure availability for all, adding that it will reduce the logistical challenges. "Instead of visiting ward offices to pay fees and wait for manual scheduling, citizens should be empowered to book and track water tankers instantly through a secure mobile app," he asserted.
The authority has asserted that it will continue with the water cuts of 10 per cent for domestic supply.
