Sharda University Suicide: The Police is probing the delay in reporting of the incident involving a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student who allegedly died by suicide at Sharda University in Greater Noida, accusing two faculty members of “harassment” in a note. Dr Shairy Vashist and Dr Mahinder Singh Chauhan, the two professors named in the note were arrested on Saturday and suspended by the university.

Greater Noida Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar told The Indian Express that they are looking into every detail of the case, “including the delay in informing the police”.

“The college has begun an inquiry; its probe will also determine the source of negligence. It is clear they informed us late… two hours after they learnt about the incident,” said Sarvesh Singh, SHO, Knowledge Park, as per The Indian Express

Jyoti, a BDS second-year student died by suicide in the girls' hostel of Sharda University located in Knowledge Park on July 18. She was found hanging in her hostel room.

The 21 year old woman named six people in the suicide note adding that she said she was humiliated, mentally harassed and was under stress for a long time. “I am sorry. I cannot live like this anymore. I can’t,” she wrote.

On Monday, the Supreme Court took note of the suicide incidents reported at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and Sharda University. Raising doubts, the apex court said that something is "seriously wrong with the educational system" which forces students to take such extreme steps. The top court also stated that contempt proceedings would be initiated if FIRs were not filed in time in both cases.
