A landslide on the outskirts of Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla killed two labourers and injured five others on Tuesday morning. Police said the incident occurred near Ashwani Khud on Junga when the victims were sleeping in makeshift huts near a stone crusher. Police have sent the body for postmortem examination and initiated a probe into the matter.
The deceased were identified as Rakesh (31) and Rajesh (40), both from Bihar. They were trapped under the debris and their bodies were recovered after an hour-long rescue operation. The injured labourers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said the police were investigating the cause of the incident and the safety measures taken by the stone crusher owner. The deputy commissioner and the sub-divisional magistrate of Shimla visited the spot and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

Police also informed the relatives and friends of the deceased living in Shimla. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and will be handed over to the families after the formalities are completed.
Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing rain and snowfall for the past week, which has increased the risk of landslides and other natural calamities. The authorities have advised the people to exercise caution.
