Uttarakhand Weather: IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert For Several Districts; Yamunotri Highway Closed After Landslides

Heavy rain continues from the hills to the plains of Uttarakhand, with the Meteorological Department issuing a warning of heavy rainfall over the next two days.

While the Kedarnath and Badrinath Yatras are continuing smoothly, the Yamunotri National Highway has been closed due to landslides. Heavy rain has been lashing several parts of the state since late Saturday night, leading to a drop in temperatures.

Yamunotri Highway Closed

Rain continues in Badrinath and Kedarnath. Drizzle was reported in Uttarkashi, including the district headquarters and surrounding areas, early on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, the Yamunotri National Highway was blocked following a landslide at Sayanachatti. Efforts are underway by NH Barkot authorities to reopen the highway.

Following landslides in Sayanachatti, Paligad and Phulchatti with boulders and debris falling on the road, traffic on the Yamunotri National Highway is suspended, according to the Disaster Management Department. Work is underway by NH Barkot to clear debris to allow traffic to resume.

It is worth noting that in the past, heavy landslides had completely disrupted traffic on the highway for nearly a week. Rain was also reported in Mussoorie, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Roorkee. Kotdwar received overnight rainfall, while the morning remained cloudy.

Rain Continues Across Kumaon

Haldwani has been experiencing rain since late Saturday night.  Champawat,  Pithoragarh, and  Bageshwar also experienced rainfall on Saturday night, resulting in significant siltation of the Saryu River. Drinking water projects have been affected. Seven roads are closed due to debris. Nainital and Almora remained cloudy.

Red and Orange Alerts Issued

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts and an orange alert in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar and Bageshwar districts on Sunday. Travellers have been advised to check the latest weather updates before undertaking any journey.

Meanwhile, Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, has directed all district administrations to remain on high alert in view of the weather warning issued by the Meteorological Department.
