Year Ender 2025: The Supreme Court delivered several landmark judgments in 2025 that significantly strengthened civil rights, environmental protection, and the justice system. The apex court prohibited the use of handcuffs on hospitalised accused persons, underscoring the importance of human dignity. It also cracked down on the misuse of bulldozers, declaring illegal demolitions unconstitutional. Other notable rulings addressed the management of stray dogs, imposed a stay on amendments related to Waqf laws, and set clear time limits for the appointment of civil judges, reinforcing accountability and the rule of law.
Handcuffs Banned In Hospitals
On February 11, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that handcuffing or chaining a patient in an ICU is illegal. Regardless of the severity of the crime, human dignity is paramount during treatment.
Only States Can Tax Lotteries, Not Centre
On February 11, 2025, the court clarified that the power to impose tax on lotteries rests solely with the states, not the central government. This falls under the State List of the Constitution. This means that the states will retain their power.
Permanent Commission To Women Officers
On May 8, 2025, the court stated that restricting women to staff roles was wrong. They should be given equal opportunities in permanent commissions and command roles.
Management Of Stray Dogs
On August 22, the Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling regarding stray dogs. In its decision, the court amended its August 11 directive, which called for the capture and placement of stray dogs in shelters. In its fresh ruling, the court stated that only sick and aggressive dogs will be placed in shelters.

7 Years Experience To Become District Judge
On October 9, 2025, the court ruled that a person can become a district judge if they have seven years of combined legal experience and seven years of experience as a judge. The minimum age is 35 years.
Ban On Bulldozer Action
The order, dated November 13, 2024, was implemented in 2025. According to this decision, demolition of homes without court proceedings is prohibited. Notice, hearing, and appeals will be provided. Officers who violate the rules will be held accountable.
Business Deals: 24 Per Cent Interest Rate Valid
On November 18, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that if both parties to a contract have agreed on a 24 per cent interest rate, the court cannot simply dismiss it as "excessive." This means that the deal agreed upon by both parties remains valid.
New Definition Of Aravalli
On November 20, 2025, the court ruled that only mountains that are 100 metres above the ground will be included in the Aravalli range. This could leave 90 per cent of the area outside of protection. This could increase the environmental threat.
AI Screening On Social Media
On November 28, 2025, the court ruled that AI screening would be necessary to prevent harmful content. This should be done by an independent body, not the government, to ensure free speech.
