The Bombay High Court on Wednesday allowed spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife Dhanashree Verma to waive their six-month cooling-off period after filing for divorce. The court further directed the family court to decide their plea by Thursday, March 20. The single bench presided by Justice Madhav Jamdar pronounced the decision.

Citing the reason behind the direction for urgent disposal of the matter, the bench observed that Chahal would not be available from March 21 as he has to participate in the upcoming cricket tournament Indian Premier League (IPL). "As the petitioner No 1 (Chahal) is a participant of IPL, the advocate informs that he may not be available post March 21. The family court is hence requested to decide their divorce plea by tomorrow (March 20)," the high court said.

The couple approached the Bombay High Court challenging the order by the family court. The family court had denied the request to waive the statutory cooling-off period for the divorce of cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma under the Hindu Marriage Act on February 20.

Cricketer Chahal and his estranged wife filed a divorce plea in family court on February 5 this year. In a joint plea, the couple asked the family court to exempt them from the cooling-off period, stating that their decision to divorce was amicable and mutual.

Under the Hindu Marriage Act, every couple has to undergo a six-month cooling-off period before they are granted a divorce. As per Section 13B(2), a family court can consider a mutual petition for divorce only after six months from the date of its filing. The couple is given a cooling-off period in order to explore possibilities of settlement and reunion. But, with Chahal and Dhanshree living apart from each other for more than 2 years, the Bombay HC didn't feel that the cooling-off clause applied in this case.
