Aadi Perukku 2023: The auspicious festival of Aadi Perukku is celebrated across the country by the Tamil community with great joy and enthusiasm. The occasion is celebrated annually on the 18th day of Aadi month and is also referred to as Pathinettam Perukku. It is a traditional Tamil festival widely celebrated in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil month of ‘Aadi’ falls during the months of mid-July to mid-August in the Gregorian calendar. This year, it is being celebrated on August 3 with great jubilation and grand festivities.

Aadi Perukku 2023: Significance

The festival of Aadi Perukku is celebrated to pay tribute to the life-sustaining properties of water, as it is considered a gift to mankind. The Aadi month usually begins with the monsoon, which raises the water level in rivers, leading to great irrigation and harvest. Therefore, the Aadi Perukku festival is celebrated to show gratitude to the God of monsoon, nature and Goddess Kaveri.

Aadi Perukku 2023: Celebrations

In Tamil Nadu, people worship the lakes and rivers to express their gratitude as a part of the celebrations. Family members and friends get together to offer their prayers to God and share relishing meals. Women of the house prepare delicious meals and distribute them among friends and families. Visiting rivers and lakes and lighting lamps made of rice flour and jaggery are an important part of the Aadi Perukku festivities. The female devotees chant religious mantras, hymns and offer haldi-kumkum to the Goddess along with rice, flowers and wheat.
