Basant Panchami 2025: Significance

Basant Panchami is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goddess Saraswati, earning it the additional title of Saraswati Jayanti. This day holds great significance as it is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Saraswati, the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. Just as Diwali is a pivotal day for honouring Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Navratri is a celebration of Goddess Durga, the goddess of power and valour, Basant Panchami is a day to pay homage to Goddess Saraswati.

On Basant Panchami, many educational institutions, including schools and colleges, organise Saraswati Puja to seek the goddess's blessings. This day also marks the ritual of Vidya Arambha, where young children are introduced to the world of education and formal learning. By performing these rituals, devotees aim to invoke Goddess Saraswati's blessings for knowledge, wisdom and academic success.

Basant Panchami 2025: Rituals

Basant Panchami is a vibrant festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, where devotees worship her with great fervour. On this day, people wear yellow attire, symbolising the vibrancy of life and nature's vividness. Young girls, in particular, adorn bright yellow dresses, adding to the festivities. Yellow also represents love, prosperity and purity.

Devotees begin their day early, preparing for Goddess Saraswati's worship. They beautifully adorn her idols and offer prayers with full devotion. Yellow flowers are offered to the goddess, and a special sweet dish, 'Kesar Halwa', is prepared using flour, nuts, sugar, and cardamom powder. This dish is also infused with saffron strands, giving it a mild fragrance and vibrant yellow colour.

Basant Panchami holds great significance for students, as Goddess Saraswati is the embodiment of wisdom and knowledge. Students worship her with immense zeal, seeking enlightenment and placing their notebooks and stationery near her feet. This day is also considered auspicious for initiating young children's education, a tradition known as 'Vidya Arambham' or 'Akshar Abhyasam'.

In some regions, particularly Punjab and Haryana, kite-flying is a renowned tradition on Basant Panchami. People of all ages participate in kite-flying competitions, adding to the festival's joy and vibrancy. Schools and colleges also organise special events to celebrate this day.
