Vishweshwara Vrat 2025: Vrat Katha
There was a king named Kunda of the Kuthara dynasty. King Kunda once invited Sage Bhargava to his palace, but Sage Bhargava declined the king's invitation, saying that his kingdom had no temples or sacred rivers where he could worship on the third day of the Bhishma Panchak, before Kartik Purnima.
Understanding the reason for Sage Bhargava's refusal, King Kunda left his kingdom and went to the banks of the River Ganga to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. There, King Kunda performed various yagnas. Lord Shiva was pleased with these yagnas and asked King Kunda to grant him any boon. Afterwards, King Kunda requested Lord Shiva to stay in his kingdom as a boon.
Lord Shiva was so pleased with King Kunda's rituals that he happily agreed to reside in his kingdom. However, when Lord Shiva stopped at a kanda tree, he noticed a tribal woman searching for her son, lost in the forest. The woman, searching for her son, went to the kanda tree and struck it with a sword, but instead, blood began to gush from the tree.

Seeing the blood gushing from the tree, she realised it wasn't a kanda, but her son. She began crying and loudly calling out her son's name, "Yelu." Then, Lord Shiva appeared before her in the form of a linga. The linga from that sword can still be seen at the Yeluru Vishweshwara Temple. Therefore, this auspicious day has been celebrated since that day. It is strongly believed that the Yeluru Sri Vishweshwara Temple in Karnataka is built on the spot where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a linga.
