IWL Rules And Format: How Will The League Work?
The IWL is the top tier of women’s club football in India, with the eight participating teams competing for the league title. The detailed match format for 2026-27 should be confirmed through the official regulations and fixture announcement.
The previous season featured a double round-robin format, with teams facing one another twice. The side finishing with the most points was crowned champion, while the bottom two teams faced relegation to IWL 2. Whether the same format and relegation arrangements will apply unchanged in 2026-27 should be confirmed by the AIFF.
The federation has also announced regulatory changes for the upcoming season. Under the revised disciplinary rules, a player will receive a suspension after accumulating three yellow cards, with another suspension triggered after every two additional yellow cards.
In addition, a player registered or signed for an IWL club will not be eligible to play in IWL 2 during the same season.
From the 2027-28 campaign, IWL head coaches will need an AFC A Licence, while assistant coaches must hold an AFC B Licence.
IWL 2026-27 Foreign Player Rules
Foreign players have been an important part of the IWL, with clubs using overseas signings to strengthen their squads and add international experience.
In the 2025-26 season, clubs were permitted to register a maximum of three foreign players, and all three could feature in the starting lineup. However, the AIFF's latest announcement on the 2026-27 season did not confirm whether this limit will remain unchanged.
