Since its launch in May 2023, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has skyrocketed to $2 billion in global consumer spending, according to app intelligence firm Appfigures. This milestone is 30x higher than the combined lifetime spending of rival AI chatbots, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
ChatGPT's mobile application has raked in $1.35 billion for the year so far, an incredible year-over-year increase of 673% off a mere $174 million generated between January and July in 2024. On average, they are now pulling in close to $193 million per month, up from a mere $25 million last year.
Competitors Struggle to Keep Up
By comparison, Elon Musk’s Grok — the nearest competitor — made only $25.6 million this year, averaging $3.6 million monthly, or just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s mobile revenue. Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot trail even further behind, highlighting ChatGPT’s overwhelming lead in consumer adoption.

Despite Grok launching in November 2023, its mobile presence came much later. The iOS app only appeared in January 2025, with Google Play access rolling out in March 2025.
Revenue Per Download Comparison
According to Appfigures, ChatGPT also leads on spending per download:
- ChatGPT: $2.91 globally | $10 in the U.S.
- Claude: $2.55
- Grok: $0.75
- Copilot: $0.28
The U.S. accounts for 38% of ChatGPT’s lifetime revenue, followed by Germany (5.3%).

Massive Global Adoption
ChatGPT’s mobile app has now been installed 690 million times worldwide, dwarfing Grok’s 39.5 million downloads. In 2025 alone, ChatGPT was downloaded 318 million times, nearly 3x more than during the same period last year.
India was the top install market (13.7%), followed by the U.S. (10.3%). Average monthly downloads increased 178% year-over-year to reach 45 million on average per month from 16 million in 2024.
ChatGPT stands as an undisputed leader among mobile AI apps, boasting unparalleled consumer spending, downloads and global reach.
