Photo-sharing application Instagram has surpassed TikTok to become the world's most downloaded app. The new app downloads in 2023 were majorly fueled by the 'Reels' feature, which was copied from the foundation of popular short video platforms. According to Sensor Tower, Instagram's app downloads rose by 20 per cent last year and it was downloaded 767 million times.
On the other hand, TikTok witnessed a rise of four per cent to amass 733 million downloads. According to the data, the Beijing-based platform was among the most downloaded apps between 2018 and 2022 across the globe. The Mark Zuckerberg-led company introduced a "reels" feature to post short clips in 2020, similar to TikTok, that are in vogue these days among Gen Z users.
"Instagram has outperformed TikTok in adoption over the past few years, driven by the popularity of its reels feature along with legacy social media features and functions," citing Sensor Tower's Abraham Yousef, Financial Times reported. From the data, it seems TikTok's growth rate is on a downward curve.

On the other hand, the monthly active users of the Meta app reached 1.47 billion, cementing a rise of 13 million in the final quarter of 2023, Sensor Tower reported. In comparison, TikTok reached 1.12 billion users, with a decline of 12 million in Q4 2023. While the facts are in favour of Instagram, active users engage on average for 95 minutes on TikTok compared to 62 minutes on the photo-sharing app.
In comparison, on X (formerly Twitter) and Snapchat, active users spend 30 minutes and 19 minutes worldwide. As per Sensor Tower, TikTok-parent ByteDance earned over $4 billion via in-app purchases in 2023, while Instagram managed $143 million. TikTok continues to remain banned in India. Meanwhile, the photo-sharing application introduced new features within its DM section. Users can now edit their chats within Instagram DMs.
