Nothing has officially unveiled its new AI platform, Essential, marking the company’s first step toward building a future personal operating system. Designed to make technology more personal, adaptive, and user-controlled, Essential shifts focus from one-size-fits-all apps to tools that prioritise creativity and individual needs.

Essential Apps: Create Custom Tools Instantly

At the heart of Essential are Essential Apps, which let users instantly create their own apps using natural language prompts. For example, you could ask your device to:

- “Capture receipts from my camera roll and export them as a weekly finance-ready PDF.”

- “Show me a one-page briefing before calls based on my calendar and messages.”

AI then generates a tailored app based on the request, which can be added directly to the home screen. This removes the need for traditional coding or reliance on pre-built apps.

Playground: A Community of Shared Innovation

Playground, the second core feature, provides users with an interactive environment where they can share, remix and download apps created by others. Already, in its alpha form, the Nothing community has built hundreds of Essential Apps from mental health trackers to family organisers.

This platform was designed to take away barriers associated with app creation and make it accessible for everyone - not just professional developers.

Carl Pei’s Vision for Essential

Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, framed the launch as a step toward dismantling the legacy system of tech giants:

“With Essential, we begin to chip away at the outdated and elitist system set up by the legacy market leaders. A new era requires new thinking. The future of software will be one of unrestricted access, collective innovation, and hyper personalisation. Moats of the past will be dismantled, opening the door to a truly user-led future.”

Nothing’s Growth Trajectory

Nothing's ambition of creating an independent AI ecosystem can be seen through its rapid growth. Within five years, Nothing claims it has shipped millions of devices and generated over $1 billion in sales revenue, solidifying itself as an effective competitor to established tech giants.

Why It Matters

Nothing's Essential is betting on an imagined future where users craft their own digital experiences instead of conforming to rigid systems. By combining AI-powered app creation with community-led innovation, Essential could mark a turning point in how we view software, apps and personalisation.
