According to reports, OpenAI is developing an advanced social media platform which would integrate AI technology, along with hopes for further advancements in their existing software. Even though information is still emerging, it is reported that the social media platform gives users real-time engagement and generative AI features, which could potentially change the market today led by X (previously Twitter), Meta, and other technology companies. The interests surrounding managing, personalizing, and interacting through AI-technology has grown OpenAI Emphasis could be placed on leveraging powerful GPT models to provide intelligent feeds, enhanced content discovery, and intelligent discussion moderation. Should they be brought to fruition, the advancement beyond existing standards would radically change the public’s perception of interacting with social media on platforms powered by AI technology.

It has been reported in the news that OpenAI is developing a new social media platform. San Francisco’s AI infrastructure company reportedly wants to build AI functionalities into the new social application, although approaches on how that will be done have not been divulged as of yet. This new platform is expected to rival X, owned by Elon Musk, and the rest of the social media dominated by Meta. Strikingly, X and Meta have recently incorporated AI functionalities into their services, meaning they are racing with OpenAI. This news comes shortly after OpenAI launched the latest versions of their models called GPT-4.1.
ChatGPT Might Be the Brain
Reuters and The Verge reported that OpenAI is planning an expansion into the social media vertical by developing an “X-like social network.” The report claims that the firm has built an internal prototype of the platform. Sources also mention the prototype works of the image generation part of ChatGPT's GPT-4o. The "social" part of it is a public feed where supposedly posted images are showcased.

It's been said that OpenAI's Sam Altman has discussed the prototype with people external to the organisation. The report could not verify whether the intention is to develop a separate application or to merge this social component with ChatGPT. It is noteworthy that the company's Sora platform for video generation also includes a feed, but it does not contain the social element because the creators of the images and videos do not appear on the feed page.

From these details, it seems that OpenAI envisions a dedicated social app as an AI-augmented platform, rather than integrating social features with AI components like X, Facebook, or Instagram.

The launch of social media by OpenAI will once again stir competition against X and Meta. X's owner, Musk, has publicly branded Altman and the AI company's profit-centric approach as origin-of-evil activities. The billionaire has sued OpenAI in the past and, it is believed, even attempted to buy the company. In response to the purchasing bid, Altman said on social media: “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if that’s what you want.”

Earlier this year, Meta was allegedly working on the development of a standalone Chat GPT competitor, dubbed the ‘Meta AI’ app. In reaction to those rumours, the OpenAI CEO quipped, “Ok fine, maybe we will do a social app.”
