Uttar Pradesh: A 31-year-old Army doctor, Major Rohit Bachwala, helped a woman deliver a baby at the Virangana Laxmibai Jhansi railway station on Saturday afternoon using just a pocket knife, hair clips, and a dhoti as improvised surgical tools. Major Bachwala, posted at the Jhansi Military Hospital, was en route to Hyderabad via Bengaluru on a month-long leave to reunite with his family when the emergency unfolded.
While waiting for his train at the railway station, Major Rohit Bachwala noticed a pregnant woman in intense labor on the footover bridge. Without hesitation, he sprang into action, using his pocket knife along with improvised materials like hair clips and a dhoti to assist in the delivery. Railway women staff promptly responded, helping secure the area to ensure privacy and safety, and also provided him with gloves to aid in the procedure.
"The mother and the newborn were stable post delivery. An ambulance was arranged to transport them to a nearby hospital for further care," Major Rohit said.
"A woman TTE was taking the pregnant woman for medical assistance in a wheelchair. As she was brought out of lift on a footover bridge, the pregnant lady screamed in pain. I rushed towards her and with whatever resources I had helped her deliver the baby," he added.
Today, an Army doctor, Major Rohit, of Military Hospital, Jhansi, successfully conducted childbirth at the railway station in Jhansi. The woman was traveling from Panvel to Barabanki with her husband and child aboard the Panvel-Gorakhpur Express (15066). Her husband had sent an SOS to railway authorities requesting urgent medical help, prompting the family to be deboarded at Jhansi station. Major Rohit, who hails from Hyderabad and is the son of a former Indian Air Force personnel, happened to be at the station at the time and stepped in to assist.
"Railways was informed about the pregnant woman passenger, who had sought medical assistance through the Rail Madad app. Promptly, the Jhansi control room was activated and a team was quickly prepared for medical assistance. As soon as the train reached Veerangana Laxmibai Jhansi station, the female passenger was attended to by a railway medical team and railway ticket checking staff," the Jhansi division of North Central Railway said, according to the TOI report.
Major Rohit is the son of a former Indian Air Force personnel, carrying forward a proud legacy of service to the nation.
