The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is set to develop the under-construction Bunkar Mart in Madhuban Bapudham as a Bunkar Mart-cum-Expo and Convention Centre. The initiative aims to provide a common platform for artisans and weavers, both small and large, to showcase and market their products. For the operation and maintenance of the facility, the GDA has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) from private companies.

The project is expected to be opened to the public next year and is likely to generate employment for more than 500 people. The Bunkar Mart project was originally launched in 2016 with an estimated cost of around Rs 200 crore to offer better facilities to the state’s weavers, promote their products under one roof, and create livelihood opportunities. However, despite nine years having passed, the project remained incomplete. In recent months, construction work has gained momentum, and about 85 per cent of the project has now been completed.

The authority is developing the Bunkar Mart on the lines of Delhi’s Pragati Maidan and Dilli Haat, with plans to establish it as a modern, large-scale expo and convention centre. Once operational, it is expected to serve as a major hub connecting skilled artisans with national and international markets. The responsibility for its operation, maintenance, and overall management will be handed over to a private agency.

The centre is expected to help weavers secure fair prices for their products by enabling direct interaction with buyers from across the country and abroad. Regular organisation of expos, trade fairs, workshops, and cultural programmes at the venue is also expected to create new employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.

As part of the project, an auditorium covering an area of 13,740 square metres with a seating capacity of 560 is being constructed. The complex will also include a museum, food courts on all floors, a residential complex, conference halls, exhibition halls, and shops of various sizes.

GDA Vice-Chairman Nand Kishor Kalal said that preparations are underway to open the Bunkar Mart as an expo and convention centre next year so that people from all sections of society can benefit from the facility.
