In a move to blend modern infrastructure with heritage aesthetics, the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation is constructing the state capital's first arch bridge in Old Lucknow. Located adjacent to the historic PakkaPul (popularly known as Lalpul), the new structure is being built as an exact replica of the 1914 British-era bridge.
Preserving Heritage
The new bridge is designed to serve as a visual reminder of the original PakkaPul.
Design: It will feature the same architectural style and red colour scheme as the Lalpul.
Visual Continuity: Once completed, the Bridge Corporation intends to repaint the old dilapidated bridge, making it difficult to distinguish between the historical structure and its modern twin.
Background: The initiative was taken after the original bridge, built in 1914, fell into a dilapidated state and vehicular traffic had to be halted.
Construction Status And Timeline
Work on the project is progressing rapidly.
Current Status: More than 60 per cent of the construction is complete. Three arches are fully finished, and one is currently under construction.
Deadline: While the official scheduled completion date is June 2027, officials claim the work is on track to be finished early by September 2026.
Project Specifications
To accommodate the growing population, the new PakkaPul is being constructed as a four-lane bridge.
Cost: Rs 93 crore.
Dimensions: The bridge itself is 180 metres long, with approach roads on both sides measuring 326 metres.
Structure: The bridge will feature a total of six arches. A key design feature is the gap of approximately 30 metres between each arch.

Impact On Connectivity
The new bridge is expected to meet the city's needs for several decades and bring relief to a population of over 500,000.
Local Traffic: It will provide accessible and safe transport from the Daliganj-Purania side to key areas like the Medical College, Chowk and Nakkhas.
Highway Connectivity: As part of a national highway, the bridge will facilitate the movement of heavy and light vehicles travelling to and from Delhi, Bareilly, Sitapur and Hardoi.
