Honda Amaze, Kia Carens Global NCAP Ratings Revealed: Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) has released crash test results for Indian vehicles under its Safer Cars For India campaign. These vehicles include two models - Honda Amaze and Kia Carens. These vehicles are the last to be tested under the Global NCAP protocols, as Bharat NCAP has been taking over the task of testing safety of new vehicles in India.

Honda Amaze has received a two-star safety rating in the Global NCAP crash test results, whereas the Kia Carens has received a safety rating of three stars for models produced after December 2023. However, units of Kia Carens produced between May 2023 and December 2023, received a zero star safety rating. Let’s take a detailed look at the safety ratings of both vehicles.

Honda Amaze Global NCAP Results

The Honda Amaze, a sub-4-metre sedan, underwent crash testing by Global NCAP. It received a two-star rating for adult occupant protection and a zero-star rating for child occupant protection. The adult occupant protection score was affected by the lack of optional side head protection, standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and a seat belt reminder for only the driver. In the test, the child protection aspect showed significant issues such as head contact during frontal impact, high chest and neck loadings for the three-year-old dummy, and ejection risk for the 1.5-year-old dummies. Zero stars were attributed due to the absence of three-point seat belts in all positions, a disconnected passenger airbag switch and some child restraint system installation failures.

Although the Amaze's current models have seat belt reminders for all seats, the tested model lacked these features. Honda's recent updates to enhance safety across its lineup suggest that newer versions might have performed differently in the tests.

Kia Carens Global NCAP Results

The Kia Carens has now undergone crash testing under the new stricter Global NCAP protocols. However, the MPV initially received zero stars for adult occupant protection. Owing to this result, Kia India made subsequent improvements that resulted in a three-star rating this time.

Improvements have been made in neck and restraint system performance. However, the bodyshell integrity in frontal impacts was considered unstable and there were concerns about seat belt reminders fulfilling safety requirements only for the front row. In the child occupant category, Kia Carens initially received a four-star rating. With improvements in restraint systems this result has been upgraded to a five-star child occupant protection rating.
