Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class: German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes has revealed its new electric SUV, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. This model is expected to debut in Beijing soon and later make its way to India this year. Mercedes-Benz boasts that the G-Class electric SUV offers exceptional off-road performance, even surpassing its ICE counterpart. The G 580 with EQ Technology is essentially a G-Class that's powered by batteries, marking a shift in Mercedes' electric vehicle naming strategy.

Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class - Design 

In terms of design, the G 580 closely resembles the updated G 450d, with some subtle changes like a redesigned grille and discrete EQ badges. Mercedes has worked extensively on aerodynamic efficiency, including tweaks to the A-pillar design, a new spoiler lip on the front roof and a sculpted bonnet, resulting in a reduced drag coefficient of 0.44.

Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class - Powertrain 

Talking about its powertrain, the G 580 is equipped with four electric motors, one for each wheel. These four electric motors produce a combined output of 587 bhp and a massive 1,165 Nm of torque. These motors are specifically developed for this model and come with a unique 2-speed gearbox. The focus is on delivering excellent off-road performance, matching or surpassing the petrol-powered G-Class. 

Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class - Battery 

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 is powered by a 116kWh battery shared with the EQS, offering a claimed range of 470km. It can be fast-charged at speeds up to 200kW. Mercedes emphasises the off-roading capabilities, highlighting the G 580's performance on challenging terrains like the Schockl mountain pass in Austria.

Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class - Additional Features 

Despite the added weight due to the batteries, the G 580 comes with a special underride guard to protect the battery and act as a skidplate during off-road driving. It also offers a unique cabin experience with the G-Roar function, providing an emotive sound experience.
