Over the years, the automotive industry has faced criticism because when we talk about cars and the environment together, the conversation hasn't always been positive due to concerns about the environmental impact of vehicles. However, automakers are increasingly taking steps to address these issues by producing electric or hybrid vehicles. However, active steps have been taken beyond just EVs and hybrids. Let's look at some vehicles that are leading the way with being the most sustainably produced cars.

Polestar 2

This vehicle is made in a factory powered by 100 per cent solar energy, with 85 per cent of its components being recyclable. Sustainable materials like recycled plastic (rPET) and reconstructed wood are used in its construction, along with upholstery that minimises chemical usage from between 35 and 45 per cent to just 1 per cent of the production process.

Mazda MX-30

Mazda has a history of using sustainable materials, and the MX-30 continues this trend with recycled plastics in its fabric and door cards. Notably, it features cork in the centre console, paying homage to Mazda's history as a cork manufacturer.

BMW i5

BMW i5 emphasises on sustainable production by using eco-electricity in its manufacturing plants. Additionally, it incorporates recycled materials like old fishing nets and plastic into its floor panels. It also offers leather-free alternatives for upholstery, such as the Veganza seats that are vegan friendly.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla stands out for its sustainability approach as it designs eco-friendly giga-factories powered by solar and wind energy. Tesla factories are made to produce less waste right from the start. It uses less water than other OEMs while manufacturing cars and utilises AI for efficient heating and ventilation in its cars. Tesla also prioritises sustainably sourced materials in its vehicles and promotes eco-friendly energy for its Supercharger network.
