Kerala Cricket League 2025: Star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been in sublime form during the ongoing Kerala Cricket League by playing brilliant shots. While playing for Kochi Blue Tigers, Samson had scored 285 runs as an opener. He had hit a maximum of sixes till now as he had smashed 21 sixes after playing in five matches. He also has the best batting average of 71.25 and has a strike rate of 182.69.
During their last match against Trivandrum Royals, he was the highest run-scorer as he had scored 62 runs off 37 balls, in which he had smashed five sixes and four fours. Initially, he had also scored a brilliant knock of 89 runs off 46 balls against Thrissur Titans, and his knock consisted of sixes. He was at his absolute best against Kollam Sailors as he had scored 121 runs, smashing seven sixes.
Sanju has grabbed all the attention recently for lots of reasons. By including Shubman Gill in India's Asia Cup team, there are high chances that Sanju's spot as an opener might be up for grabs. Sanju, as an opener, was in sublime form last year. He was the first player to have smashed three centuries in the shortest format. But ever since Gill had been recalled to India's T20I side, Sanju might play as a middle-order batter, and that's one area where he doesn't have a good record.
Former cricketers have also reckoned that Gill might replace Sanju as an opener in the Asia Cup 2025. Senior Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that Gill might open India's innings with Abhishek Sharma.
“Shubman is back in the team, I’m sure he is most likely to open with Abhishek Sharma. Personally, I would like to see Sanju Samson in the team because he has done really well. He is a very confident guy, a very good team man, and that is very important," Rahane was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
Aakash Chopra too opined that Samson will be dropped even though he is at his absolute best during the ongoing KCL.

“With Shubman Gill’s return, Sanju Samson’s fate has more or less been sealed. He will not feature in the playing XI now. You will not drop Tilak Varma or Hardik Pandya, which means Samson sits out and Jitesh Sharma will likely get the nod again," Chopra said.
