USA Cricket Team: The ICC has suspended the USA cricket team's membership immediately after they repeatedly breached all the obligations as an ICC member on Tuesday, September 23. The ICC board members made this decision after reviewing it for a year with the stakeholders.

These breaches consist of their inability to build a functional governance structure, lack of progress towards recognition as a National Governing Body by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and the actions that have ruined the image of this sport in the US and around the world.

These suspensions were made after one year when the USA created a huge upset by defeating Pakistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup. At the same time, the USA’s franchise league tournament has witnessed IPL owners investing in it.

"The decision, taken by the ICC Board during its meeting earlier, was based on USA Cricket’s repeated and continued breaches of its obligations as an ICC Member under the ICC’s Constitution," the statement released by ICC said.

"These include, but are not limited to, the failure to implement a functional governance structure, lack of progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world," it said.

NATIONAL TEAMS WILL CONTINUE TO COMPETE

Although USA cricket did get suspended, the ICC has revealed that its national team can still participate in ICC tournaments, which will help them to prepare for the LA28 Olympics. In order to protect the players, the management and the administration will be overseen by the ICC for a while.

The USA will be qualifying for the Olympics since they are the host.

The additional measures, which will be taken, consist of maintaining high performance, and the player's development programme will make sure that the growth of the sport will be seen in the US.

ICC's Normalisation Committee, which is backed by its management, will be searching for the steps needed to lift USA cricket's suspensions. These consist of governance reforms, operations, and organisational status since the committee will also be keeping a check on its progress.

The ICC emphasised that it will be protecting the players and the sport's ecosystem in the US and will also make sure that its future remains intact.

This decision was made after the USA cricket team was put on notice during the ICC AGM 2024, where they couldn't follow the ICC's membership criteria. They were warned again earlier this year, and despite being assured by the ICC, they failed to fulfill the commitments. The board had also reminded them that they shouldn't pursue the sports' Olympic dreams or do something that might ruin the sport or ICC's image.

The ICC said that the suspension was “unfortunate but necessary” to protect its future.
