For nearly four decades, David Dhawan has been one of Hindi cinema's most successful comedy filmmakers, delivering hits like Judwaa, Coolie No. 1, Raja Babu and Partner. However, the veteran director recently admitted that comedy has changed with time and filmmakers now work under several 'restrictions'. Speaking about today’s audience and evolving sensibilities, David Dhawan said certain jokes are no longer acceptable and added that women cannot be degraded in films anymore.

David Dhawan On 'Restrictions' In Comedy

David Dhawan had a career retrospective with his son, actor Varun Dhawan, on Saturday at the launch of PVR INOX's David Dhawan Film Festival. The 74-year-old filmmaker stated throughout the conversation that comedy movies are now subject to more scrutiny.

David Dhawan said, "You can't degrade a woman in films today. If you do so, the censor board will give you a list of papers about its restrictions. So, I was a little careful and sensitive towards it (women characters), while with the men, I can do anything onscreen."

David Dhawan Hints At Retirement

David Dhawan stated that he is 'tired', but not 'tired of making films', after directing 45 movies over the course of a 37-year career. "You get tired, but you don't get tired of making films. I'm the guy who has made so many films, I can make another four films, but sometimes health has to be looked at, and you've a family (to be with)."

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently said that David Dhawan hinted at retirement after attending the film festival's inauguration, stating that his next project, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, might be his final one.

David Dhawan Hit And Flop Movies

David Dhawan started his career as an editor in Mahesh Bhatt's Saaransh in 1984 before transitioning to directing with Taaqatwar in 1989. His first few movies were box office disasters until he experienced success with Shola Aur Shabnam in 1992.

Coolie No. 1, Saajan Chale Sasural, Judwaa, Hero No. 1, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan were among the hits that followed his 1994 comedic breakthrough with Raja Babu.
