Producer Vashu Bhagnani, who is embroiled in a legal dispute with David Dhawan, claimed that following the disappearance of their 2020 collaboration Coolie No. 1, his son Varun Dhawan never bothered to see how he was doing. In response to the recent legal dispute involving David Dhawan and the record label Tips, the producer conducted a virtual press conference.
Vashu Bhagnani said, "I told David ji that I want to make Biwi No 1. We suffered a loss of around Rs. 27 crores in Coolie No 1 (2020). I was just a namesake producer. It was David ji who 100% handled the production and expenses. I paid David ji big money to make that film; almost Rs. 70 crore, which was not even his worth (sic)."
Vashu Bhagnani also discussed his losses following Coolie No. 1's failure during the press conference. "It was the time of COVID and David ji told me, ‘Aapka jo bhi nuksaan hua hai, we’ll take care of in future. Let’s start Biwi No 1.’ Accordingly, we worked on Biwi No 1 for six months. One day, Rohit Dhawan told me that the script is not ready. Since its creative work, I decided not to hurry. Aaram se picture banate hai (sic)."
Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan appeared in Coolie No. 1 (2020). The movie was released on over-the-top platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The critics gave it mostly negative reviews. David Dhawan's directorial had a terrible rating of 1.4 on IMDb.
Vashu Bhagnani On Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Song Row
Vashu Bhagnani continued by saying that he personally called David Dhawan after learning that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai featured the song Chunari Chunari from his movie Biwi No. 1. Vashu recalled the events and stated he was upset to learn that David Dhawan and Ramesh Taurani had collaborated on a movie. At that point, he confronted David Dhawan over the phone.
The producer revealed that they sold Tips the audio rights to Biwi No. 1 at the time of its release, and he asserted that the label's representatives are unwilling to speak with him about this matter.

Vashu Bhagnanai acknowledged his deep distress over the song's unapproved use. "My heart is broken. I am not afraid of anyone in this world, not even my father. I am proud that I have never done wrong to anyone. But I am broken because after doing so much, they are making me out to be the thief, the fool. Varun Dhawan is saying these things. David Ji is saying these things. Ramesh Ji too. There is no need for this."
Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde play the main parts in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. David Dhawan's directorial will be released in theatres on June 5, 2026.
