Surfacing days after the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the case had triggered a massive 'rail roko' protest in Badlapur. In the wake of the agitation, the Maharashtra government was quick to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under an IG-rank police officer and declare a fast-track trial in the case.

Last week, two separate chargesheets were filed by the SIT in the case. Separate charge sheets were filed because both the incidents took place on different dates, and thus there were two separate FIRs against the same set of accused, ANI had said in a source-based report. According to police sources cited by ANI, both the chargesheets ran into about 500 pages, and in both cases there was sufficient evidence against the accused.
