Delhi New CM Announcement: The BJP on Wednesday selected Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, following a legislative party meeting in the capital. A first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Rekha Gupta's selection marks a historic moment, making her the only female Chief Minister from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) across India.
Who Is Rekha Gupta?
Rekha Gupta, an LLB graduate and seasoned politician, has been actively engaged in politics since her college days. Born in 1974 in Nandgarh village of Haryana’s Jind district, she moved to Delhi with her family in 1976 after her father secured a managerial role at the State Bank of India. She pursued her education in the city and became associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), laying the foundation for her political career.
Rekha Gupta's Political Journey
Rekha Gupta gained prominence in Delhi University politics, serving as General Secretary and later President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU). She steadily rose through BJP ranks, holding key leadership roles, including National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. In the last Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, she was the party’s mayoral candidate, further cementing her political standing.
Her political journey has been shaped by her grassroots connections and leadership within the party. Earlier, despite speculation about her appointment, Gupta remained firm in her party loyalty, stating, "I am a BJP soldier, and the decision rests with the party."

Although her immediate family now works as commission agents in the grain market of Julana, she maintains her ties with the region, frequently visiting her ancestral village. Her uncle, Ramesh Jindal, recalls that their ancestral home in Nandgarh was sold and later rebuilt. The family had a longstanding presence in the village, with her grandfather Maniram Jindal running a wholesale business before relocating to Delhi.
With her official appointment, Gupta is set to lead Delhi as its new Chief Minister, bringing a new chapter to BJP’s governance in the national capital.
