Kolkata Traffic Advisory For Kali Puja: The Kolkata Traffic Police have issued an extensive traffic advisory ahead of Kali Puja on October 20, which coincides with the festive period of Diwali. To ensure smooth movement and public safety during the celebrations, several city roads will either be closed or regulated for vehicular movement from Saturday morning until early Sunday.
Kali Puja holds great religious significance and is celebrated twice during the Diwali period, once on Narak Chaturdashi and again on Amavasya, the new moon night. Devotees believe that worshipping Goddess Kali helps eliminate fear, suffering, and negative influences.
Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Goods Vehicle Movement Restricted
From 6 AM on October 20 to 4 AM on October 21, the movement of all goods vehicles not carrying Kali Puja idols will be prohibited across Kolkata.
However, exemptions have been granted to vehicles transporting essential and perishable items such as LPG cylinders, POL (petroleum, oil, lubricants), Oxygen, Milk, Medicines, Vegetables and fruits
In addition, port-originated, port-related or port-bound goods vehicles and light goods vehicles weighing up to 1,600 kg including TATA ACE, Mahindra Jeeto and Suzuki Super Carry will be allowed to operate during this time.
Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Road Closed On October 20
From 4 PM on October 20 to 6 AM on October 21, several major roads in Kolkata will remain closed to all vehicular traffic, except for property line vehicles or when necessary, as decided by on-duty police officials.
Roads To Be closed include:
- Darbhukta Chatterjee Street
- Bansya Charan Street
- Surya Sannyasi Dey Street
- S.N. Banerjee Road (between Rani Rashmoni Road and R.A.K. Khan Road)
- R.B. Avenue and Chittar Central Food (between Sadashiv Road and Peary Mohan Roy Road)
- Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani (between Vyankateshwar Road and M.G. Road)
- Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani (between M.G. Road and B.D.M. Saha Road)
- Hrish Chandra Lane (between Bichan Sarani and Hari Ghosh Street)
- Mohon Ch. Sen Street (between A.P.C. Roy Road and Bichan Sarani)
- Keshab Chandra Street (between Anumea Iyer Road and Karmayet Majumdar)
- College Street / Bentinck Street (from G.P. Road to Vivekananda Road)
- Mahatma Gandhi Road (between Patherpore Road and Garden Reach Road)
- Patherpore Road (between Chandni Mondal Lane and Rahatkhana Avenue)
- Kolkata Traffic Diversions And Regulation For Kali Puja
The police have also announced traffic diversions on several other roads where vehicular movement will be regulated during the Kali Puja festivities.

Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Diversion Announced On These Routes
- Jadulal Mitra Road and Bhupendra Seth Street (north to south direction)
- Kailash Bose Street (east to west direction)
- Saha / Sarojini Road (between Pratapaditya Road and Tollygunge Road)
- Vivekananda Road / Tollygunge Road (from Pratapaditya Road to Gopi Bagree Lane — vehicles may turn right into Tollygunge Railway Road)
- Rousell Street (diversion from 12 PM via Ashis Ghosh Avenue – S.P. Mukherjee Road)
Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Bus Diversions Announced
- Buses from College Street / M.G. Road or Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani / G.P. Road will be diverted into G.P. Road / A.P.C. Roy Road – Vivekananda Road and move along Saha / Mukherjee Road by turns as directed.
- All buses heading for Tollygunge Road through Parliament Street, Jadulal Mitra Marg, Bentinck Street, or B.D.M. Saha Road will be rerouted via Bentinck Street, A.P.C. Roy Road, and Vivekananda Road, and turn left onto Raja Ram Mohan Roy Sarani / G.P. Road.
- Vehicles on Bentinck Street / Rousell Street will be diverted from Howrah Bridge’s eastern end into Vivekananda Road / Saha Road.
- Buses using Eastern Fleet Road / Rousell Road will start from 4 am instead of 6 am via Vivekananda Street.
- On October 20, S.N. Banerjee Road traffic will be diverted from R.A.K. Khan Road as directed by police.
- N.C. Street, Ganesh Chandra Avenue and C.R. Avenue will see movement adjustments to maintain order.
- Buses using S.N. Banerjee Road will be diverted from Moulali Crossing as required.
Police Advisory
The Kolkata Traffic Police have urged citizens to plan their journeys in advance and cooperate with traffic officials on duty. Commuters are advised to use alternative routes and follow instructions from personnel stationed across the city for smoother movement during the Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations.
