Manali and Solang Valley, Himachal Pradesh's popular winter tourist destinations, have been in the news for negative reasons over the past few days. As the tourists head towards these destinations for the New Year celebrations, they are facing major challenges of heavy snowfall. More than 1,800 vehicles are left stranded in the region due to heavy snowfall.
Several of the social media users on Monday expressed their frustration on multiple social media platforms regarding the traffic congestion. They also urged the netizens to avoid coming to the region for the new year celebrations as the region was overcrowded already. In fact, one of the users shared a video of the stranded vehicles on the social media platform Instagram, which went viral within minutes.
Chlucky Tyagi, a social media user, alerted the potential tourists to stay away from the region due to the bad weather conditions. The footage seems to be recorded at night and shows a long queue of vehicles stranded on the Solang Valley-Atal Tunnel route. He claimed that he had been stuck in that place since 10 am and expressed his frustration by saying that he had no idea when the traffic would resume moving. He also pointed out that the sub-divisional magistrate's vehicle was also stranded in the long queue of vehicles.
However, the administration has stated that they were running an operation to rescue the stranded vehicles from the region. Manali DSP KD Sharma stated that a major rescue operation was initiated after more than 2,000 vehicles got stranded between Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel due to bad weather.
He further informed that while almost 1,800 vehicles were already successfully evacuated, about 200 remained stranded, reported the Times of India. Several regions of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla and Solang Valley, have experienced severe rainfall and snowfall over the past few days. The severe snowfall has led to landslides and disruption to everyday activities.
