A viral social media display of immense wealth has led to a costly crime in Tamil Nadu. Days after a YouTuber couple from Nagercoil district uploaded videos flaunting approximately Rs 1 crore worth of gold jewellery and cash online, their home was targeted in a major burglary. The incident has ignited a widespread debate concerning the dangers of oversharing expensive possessions on social media platforms.

The burglary occurred on Thursday night. According to details shared on X by user @vijeshetty, the thieves targeted the residence of YouTubers Vinod Kumar and Madhumitha located in VIP Garden, Thammathukonam, near Nagercoil. The intruders made off with 118 sovereigns of gold ornaments and a substantial amount of cash.

Madhumitha had allegedly uploaded a video clip on her social media accounts shortly before the break-in, showcasing the family's valuables inside their puja room. She is widely known for posting content featuring luxury purchases, gold jewellery, and cash displays on Instagram Reels and other platforms.

According to News18, the burglars entered the house by breaking open the back door. Despite the residence being located in a gated area with CCTV surveillance, the intruders managed to get inside and flee with valuables estimated to be worth around Rs 1 crore.

The Rajakamangalam police have registered a case and initiated a full-scale investigation. Authorities are currently reviewing local CCTV footage and analysing mobile network call records to track down and identify the suspects.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism online.

A user wrote, “This is not a theft. This is the kind of content YouTubers and influencers create. First they show off these things, and then after some time they file a police report. Once it becomes famous, they start getting attention and views."

Another user wrote, “I think the collective IQ of humanity has reduced due to overexposure to the Internet lol."

“We need an AI to teach common sense & civic sense to humans. Because people are losing it," said a third user.

“It’s time for de-addiction centres for mobile and internet users for all, not only kids but also for all," said a fourth user.

“It is like giving the burglars a target out of their own volition. A stupid mistake," said another.

“Classic example of laalach and show-off when you get some pennies," said one more user.
