Delhi CM Oath: First-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Rekha Gupta, on Thursday took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi in a grand show of strength that marks BJP's return to power in the national capital after more than 26 years. Delhi LG VK Saxena administered the oath to Rekha Gupta at a grand ceremony at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.

With this, Rekha Gupta becomes the fourth female chief minister of Delhi. She defeated AAP's Bandana Kumari from the Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency by a margin of over 29,000 votes in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly Election 2025. The 50-year-old MLA from Shalimar Bagh is also the only woman in the NDA team of chief ministers.

Along with Rekha Gupta, six newly-elected MLAs including Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra and Pankaj Singh, also took the oath as Delhi ministers. The new chief minister and her ministers will head to the Delhi Secretariat to take charge of their offices after the oath ceremony.

Shortly after the oath, President Droupadi Murmu officially appointed the Chief Minister of Delhi and her cabinet, with a gazette notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs confirming the appointments.

"The President is pleased to appoint Mrs. Rekha Gupta as the Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date she is sworn in," read the gazette notification by Home Affairs.

Congratulating Rekha Gupta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said she has risen from the grassroots and expressed confidence that she will work for the city's development with full vigour.

Soon after the swearing-in ceremony of the new Delhi government, Modi said in a congratulatory message, "She has risen from the grassroots, being active in campus politics, state organisation, municipal administration and now MLA as well as Chief Minister. I am confident she will work for Delhi's development with full vigour. My best wishes to her for a fruitful tenure."

Having risen from the ranks and served Delhi in different organisational capacities and as a councillor, Rekha Gupta, 50, is familiar with the issues and problems of the national capital. With the BJP's election manifesto containing a slew of promises, the first-time MLA from Shalimar Baghshe is expected to hit the ground running and adopt a hands-on approach.
