Delhi CM Oath Ceremony: Vijender Gupta, MLA from the Rohini constituency, has been chosen as the new speaker of the Delhi assembly. Gupta registered a hat trick of victories and was one of the three candidates who managed to win in the 2015 assembly polls amid a wave of Aam Aadmi Party. While Gupta is now chosen as the speaker by the party MLAs, he was once literally thrown out of the same house for protesting against the then AAP government.

Gupta expressed his gratefulness for the party leaders by stating that it was a historic moment as the BJP came back in power in the state after 26 years. "It is a matter of joy that the BJP is forming the government after 27 years," Gupta was quoted as saying by PTI.

"I am thankful to the party for giving me this responsibility... to be Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. I will fulfill my responsibility. I hope we will have healthy discussions in the House," he added.

Vijender Gupta was born in Delhi and has been active in politics since he was a student. The 61-year-old BJP MLA graduated from Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and was a former vice president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU).

He was elected in the Delhi Municipal elections from Rohini three times in the earlier stages of his political career. Gupta emerged victorious for the consecutive third time in the recently concluded state assembly polls with a margin of over 37,000 votes.

Gupta stated that one of his priorities will be to present all the CAG reports that have been kept pending by the AAP government. "I will first of all get the CAG reports that were kept pending by the previous AAP government tabled before the House," Gupta stated.

Gupta, along with other party MLAs, had also approached the court, alleging that the Arvind Kejriwal-led government was not allowing the authorities to table 14 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on its performance.

He also assured that he will ensure that the decorum is maintained in the house. "Ji, Ji. Maintaining the decorum of the House is our responsibility. It is the temple of democracy, and our goal is to maintain its dignity," he said.
