Tamil Nadu Stampede: At least 38 people, including eight children, died, and over 60 got injured in a political rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur on Saturday. The officials stated that the stampede broke out at around 7.30 pm while Vijay was addressing the huge crowd gathered to see him since afternoon. While reacting to the incident, Vijay expressed his grief by stating that his heart was shattered after the stampede. While the BJP and AIADMK leaders questioned the management by the DMK government, the state ministers stated that Vijay arrived late at the rally site, leaving the supporters hungry. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered an inquiry into the matter and has also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 Lakh to the deceased.

- Tamil Nadu DGP in-charge G Venkatraman stated that the people gathered to participate in the rally lacked sufficient food and water, leading to the panic.

- The DGP also stated that the crowd swelled due to the late arrival of Vijay at the rally site

- There was a crowd surge after the official Twitter handle of the party mentioned that Vijay would arrive at the meeting venue by 12 pm.

- The state government has announced a Commission of Inquiry to probe the cause, DGP stated.

- While the organisers had requested a large ground in Karur for 10,000 people, more than 27,000 people arrived at the site.

- The Karur police lodged a case against TVK's district secretary VP Mathiyazhagan for attempt to murder and other charges 

- President Droupadi Murmu expressed her grief after the incident and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured

- Chief Minister MK Stalin rushed to Karur and interacted with doctors on the treatment being provided to the injured

- "An unfortunate incident happened; a regrettable one. As per latest information, 38 have persons have died. They are 12 men, 16 women and 10 children," DGP in-charge Venkatraman was quoted as saying by PTI.
