Bengaluru New Airport: In a major update, Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil on Friday said that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to submit its report on Bengaluru’s second airport within the next two or three days.
Earlier in April, the AAI surveyed two potential sites for Bengaluru’s second airport: one on Kanakapura Road in the city’s south and another near Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in Bengaluru Rural. The government will finalise the location in a cabinet meeting after reviewing the authority’s expert report, Times of India reported.
Patil further suggested that the AAI could recommend both sites. The airport construction firms will also assess the financial feasibility of the proposed locations. Finally, the government will conduct all necessary evaluations to ensure that Bengaluru’s second airport is built at the most suitable location.
Preliminary Work Underway For Timely Completion
The state government has already begun preliminary work on Bengaluru’s second airport to meet the 2033 deadline, Patil said. He said that a regulation prevents building a second airport within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033.
According to the officials, an early start is crucial as projects of this scale take five to six years to complete.
Karnataka Seeks Insights From Delhi, Mumbai Airports
The Karnataka government is evaluating potential locations for the second airport, taking insights from Delhi (Noida) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai), the only Indian cities with two international airports. The state is also keeping an eye on Tamil Nadu’s proposed airport in Hosur near the Karnataka border.

Legislators from North Karnataka suggested Tumakuru, while others prefer sites in South Bengaluru. Patil said that the government will consider passenger demands, industrial needs and future growth before making a final decision.
