Gujarat is working to enhance the connectivity across the state with the construction of new expressways. These e-way span 1,100 km across 13 districts and will form part of enhanced East-West and North-South corridors in the country. Out of two key projects, one is the Somnath-Dwarka Expressway, which will reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad to Somnath to 4 hours.
The project was announced in this year's budget and will be constructed by the Gujarat State Road Development Corporation (GSRDC). The GSRDC has initiated the process of finalising alignments. Once it is completed, tenders will be floated.
When will the Dwarka-Somanth Expressway be completed?
The tender process will take around 6 months, after which the construction will start. It would take approximately three years to complete the project.
The highway will be constructed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model or through other innovative contracting mechanisms.
Dwarka-Somanth Expressway: Cost, features
The estimated cost of the Swarka-Somnath Expressway is around Rs 57,120 crore. It has three segments: Ahmedabad to Rajkot, Rajkot to Porbandar, and Jetpur to Somnath.
The GSRDC is planning to provide roadside amenities at every 50 km, including parking for light and heavy vehicles, eateries, restrooms, fuel stations, medical services, and other essential facilities.
The govt has also approved another expressway named the Namo Shakti Expressway, which is estimated to cos around Rs 36,120 km. Together, both the expressways will benefit at least 45 per cent of the state population in Amreli, Botad, Surendranagar, Patan, Banaskantha, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh and Gir Somnath districts.
These expresways will also push industrial growth across the state while providing enhanced connectivity to ports in Gujarat. The No
