Andhra Pradesh: Tension gripped Ponduru village in Tanguturu mandal of Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district on Thursday after the family of Addagalla Keerthi (24), a software engineer who allegedly died by suicide following a relationship failure, brought her body to the residence of her boyfriend, Sai Sumanth.

The family staged a protest outside the residence, demanding that Sumanth tie a mangalsutra around her neck before her final rites.

8-Year Relationship Ends In Suicide; Family Demands Posthumous Wedding

Keerthi, a native of Kondrupadu village in the Prathipadu mandal of Guntur district, had been in a relationship with Sai Sumanth, a resident of Ponduru, for the past eight years after they met through social media. The relationship took a tragic turn on July 14 when Keerthi allegedly died by suicide in her Mumbai PG room, after Sumanth refused to marry her, according to a report by the Times of India.

The Tanguturu police stated that Keerthi's family claimed that before taking the extreme step, she had expressed her last wish to have her body cremated in Sai's native village.

Following the incident, police said Keerthi's parents and relatives arrived in Ponduru from Mumbai on Thursday with her body, demanding that Sumanth tie a mangalsutra around her neck and allow them to perform her last rites in the village in accordance with her alleged final wish.

"A scuffle broke out between the family members of Keerthi and Sai, as Sai, who is employed as a hardware engineer in Qatar, was not present at his residence in Ponduru. Keerthi's family members staged a dharna in front of the house with her body, demanding that Sai return and tie the knot. After Sai's family members agreed to allow her last rites to be performed in Ponduru, Keerthi's family members finally conducted the cremation in the village," TOI quoted Tanguturu SI Phani Bhushan as saying.

The SI further stated that the Mumbai Police had registered a case in connection with the incident.
