Chennai Weather: Tamil Nadu is set to see a renewed spell of heavy rainfall as the prevailing weather system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens the Northeast monsoon after a brief quiet phase. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the system will bring widespread showers across the delta and coastal districts between November 16 and November 19.

The developing weather pattern has already triggered sudden, isolated showers in parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Thursday. Forecasters expect rainfall activity to increase from Sunday. Heavy rain has been predicted in four delta districts, such as Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, along with the Karaikal region on November 17.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast

On Sunday (November 17), intense rainfall is likely across 11 delta and coastal districts, including Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry and Karaikal. Chennai and surrounding districts may also receive heavy rain on Monday (November 18). The southern coastal belt, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari, may see strong showers the following day.

By November 19, rainfall is expected to spread to several parts of Tamil Nadu. Some pockets, including Tiruvarur, may receive isolated heavy rain.

RMC officials noted that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is fuelling this wet spell. The system is likely to move westwards, providing enough moisture to keep monsoon activity active for a few more days.

The Hindu report cited RMC Head (Additional in-charge) B. Amudha as stating, the same system caused Thursday morning’s sharp showers along the coast. She added that moisture pull and wind stability can trigger sudden rainfall, and such events are usually captured only through nowcasting.

Light rain has also been forecast in parts of Chennai on Friday.
